9th Place Feature Finish at Fairbury Opener

Friday night racing action was washed out at the Farmer City Speedway after qualifying, but Saturday it was the much anticipated opening night for the Fairbury American Legion Speedway.  I set fast qualifying time for the modifieds with a 14.340 second lap.  I started outside row 1 of the lock 8 heat race where I drove around the top to lead all 8 laps.  The win started my on the pole for the feature.  We set the car up to run the high side, but the bottom groove came in much faster.  Disappointingly, I finished 9th, but excited about the weeks to come as we showed we were one of the fastest on the track before feature time.

Another Top 10 - This time at Lincoln Speedway

The good start to the season continued for Curl Racing this past weekend as we invaded the Lincoln Speedway where 49 of the top UMP Modifieds signed in for Lincoln's opening night.  I started third in my heat race and because of too many 1st lap restarts, we had to go single file.  I jump to the top to get around the 2nd place driver and closed in on the leader.  Bumper to bumper with two laps left, I made my move on the bottom to pull even as we took the white flag.  I was able to get a good run down the back stretch and slide up in front of the leader coming off turn four to win the heat.  With passing points, this heat win started me outside of row two for the main event.  We could have been more aggressive with the setup looking back, but with the heavy track conditions, I did not want the car to be tight.  I fell off the pace the last few laps and ended up a respectable 7th.

9th Place in second week at Farmer City

The weather was brutal on Friday night for week two of racing at the Farmer City Raceway.  After finally getting the drive line issues fixed and coming off of our top 5 performance last weekend, we had high expectations for the regular night.

33 modifieds took to qualifying and a sub-par performance placed me 27th overall.  Confident in the car's ability to race, I started 5th in the heat but quickly moved to 2nd where I finished.

Starting 8th when the green flag flew in the feature, I made my way to the middle of the track and picked off 3 cars early.  Following in 5th position, I tried getting a run under 4th coming off of turn two when I hit a rut and launched the car almost on it's top.  The impact jolted me enough to make the last 8 laps a struggle.  I held on for a respectable 9th place finish, but the car was a top 5 car again.
